Project Nabigyo is a community initiative in a slum area of the city of Mbale, Uganda. Our holistic approach is designed to address life threatening situations and stimulate the community to live above the poverty line. The following four initial programmes are designed to address the most pressing needs.
Funding for the school goes towards the running costs such as teacher’s salaries, educational resources, infrastructure and also towards a daily feeding programme. We believe that educating children is key to helping them succeed in life, therefore this aspect of Project Nabigyo is our top priority.
The community is in desperate need of safer toilets and places to wash. Our aim is to raise the funds for 20 community toilets to be built over 3 years, which will vastly improve the health and safety for the children in the area. Each unit will cost a total of £500 to build.
The poverty is so extreme that even though there are two points of access to clean water, they are unable to afford it. Our overall aim is to bring the community slowly yet sustainably out of poverty, but until then we aim to install and maintain 10 water filter kits costing £40 each at strategic points across Nabigyo. People will be able to bring their dirty water and have it filtered for free.
One of the main causes of death in Nabigyo is malaria. This disease is totally curable and there are some actions that can be taken to prevent it in the first place; mosquito nets cost £5 each and a dose of medication to treat malaria costs £3 per child.
This academy is currently in development. Once established the academy will give men and women an opportunity to become a productive farmer using a new, tried and tested, method of farming. If carried out well the yields can be up to four times as much as traditional methods enabling them to provide food for their children, extra crops to sell and seed to sow. The two year training programme takes place under qualified supervision with a proportion of the produce from the academy going towards the school feeding programme and the rest to the student. The cost of training a student over the two years is £120. This includes tools, seeds, fertiliser and training. To find out more about the Farming God's Way method visit www.farming-gods-way.org
