Abigail's First Day on Referrals

Hi, my name’s Abigail and I’m the new intern at Operation Orphan!  I’m currently a psychology student at Nottingham Trent University and am so excited to be doing my placement year with Operation Orphan!

I’m currently in my first week but I’m really enjoying getting stuck into the day to day processes of Operation Orphan. Yesterday I was so excited to get the opportunity to join the Forget-Me-Notts team out on my first day of referrals! I was quite nervous as I’ve never built a bed or used a drill before! Luckily I was in good hands with Matt and we successfully completed all 3 of our referrals, installing 4 new beds! It was quite an eventful day but we managed to be ahead of schedule through lots of teamwork and doing as much prep work as we could!

It was amazing to see the difference the team’s work makes for these children. It was so nice hear from the social workers what a positive impact it will have on the families. It was really lovely to be able to provide not just the beds but also brand new mattresses, fun bedding, and of course our beautiful knitted blankets! We were also able to leave a stuffed toy for each child which was really fun. That’s now 4 more children with a warm and safe place to sleep at night!

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, learnt lots of new skills, and felt so grateful to be part of this amazing program. I am so excited for my coming year with Operation Orphan and am really looking forward to my next day on referrals!
