One child at a time!

Our Global Expedition team travelled to Moldova for the Keep a Child Warm 2019 distribution where they kitted out around 1600 children for winter. The lovely thing about our distribution expedition is having the wonderful opportunity to meet each child who receives a winter kit.

Throughout the week, our team worked with one child at a time to find the most suitable coat, hat, scarf, gloves, blanket and winter pullover from the donations. It’s a bit like a shopping experience without the money. Even though they can’t afford to purchase these things, they still have the dignity of choosing what they’d like to wear.

The poverty in this nation is overwhelming. Almost half of the population are said to have left the country in the past five years. We always ask the local Moldovan people whether they think Keep a Child Warm is an important project and they always respond with a resounding YES! In Moldova, it would cost around £60 to purchase a winter kit for each child and the monthly wages for a school cleaner would be around the same so you can see why purchasing these essential items are simply out of reach for so many. We distribute these items at a cost (to us) of around £9 per child.

On the last day of distribution, it was 27 degrees Celsius in Moldova. The following day it was a maximum of 11. The coats arrived just in time for winter to begin.

It’s been a fantastic year with plenty of donations coming in from all over the country. We’ve even received packages from overseas! For those of you who helped with this year’s big shipment - Chilwell School 6th Form, Trent College, The High School, D of E students, volunteers, ambassadors, schools who donated, schools who fundraised.... you have been incredible and without you, there would be no Keep a Child Warm project! If you would like to get involved with KACW20, please get in touch!

If you’d like to join us for a distribution trip please send in your application form via our website. It will involve long hours and teamwork and it’s incredibly rewarding.
