Keep Shining

This little guy (not so little now) is an inspiration to me. His smile literally lights up the whole room and his huge heart ensures everyone who knows him feels well and truly loved.

I first met Rupert when we was a toddler and from my first encounter I could see his development was different from the other children.

If he was born in the UK, this would have been quickly identified and health care provision put in place. When you are born and raised in Ugandan slum, this kind of help is not to be expected.

Rupert was raised by his loving grandparents following a tragic start to life. He attended the local school as soon as he was physically able. His Grandad had a metal frame with wheels made for him to help him get around. Getting around was exactly what he did.

Rupert would surprise me every time I visited, defying all the odds and learning how to move independently (which NOBODY EVER EXPECTED). He did not let his disability hold him back. He was included in all the break time games, picture of inclusion and sheer determination I have yet to see anywhere else. His utter determination got Rupert walking, UNAIDED! I would have personally deemed this as impossible.

Just thinking about this little guy brings a tear to my eye and I’m so happy to report that he has been attending a fantastic residential school in the neighbouring country, a school designed for children with special needs. He is thriving there!

Operation Orphan covers half of the fees for this amazing school, the other half being funded by the Ugandan government.

Since Covid- 19, Rupert hasn’t been allowed to leave Uganda so he’s had an extended stay with his grandparents. But he hopes to get back to some sense of normality soon.

We love you Rupert - keep shining!
